Genetic counselling services are available to private and state patients at several centres across the country. Highly trained genetic counsellors help families determine the appropriate tests needed, explain and interpret results in a compassionate way.

You can get a referral letter from either your gynaecologist or specialist for the BRCA and or related genetic testing. Various Ampath, Lancet and or PathCare Laboratories are currently doing genetic testing. If you are outside the main cities download the PathCare Familial Breast Cancer Screening Form to bring along with your doctor's referral letter to take to the testing laboratory.

We strongly recommend the formal genetic counselling by an HPCSA-registered genetic counsellor for any referral of genetic testing. As per the Health Professions Council of South Africa and International Guidelines on genetic screening.

Present laboratory testing methods still have their restrictions, offering only limited insights into inherited conditions. Certain variants identified in these tests may not be prevalent across all population demographics, hence they might not be suitable as initial screening tests for individuals of diverse genetic backgrounds, Genetic Testing in Breast Cancer.

The cost of genetic testing can begin at R900 per test, varying depending on the specific type of test being conducted.
